The MISTRAL project

Experience at NUI Galway shows that technical issues are only some of the challenges faced by both teachers and learners in online learning environments. However, language students find themselves also struggling with expectations, interaction, time management, participation and above all with practicing the four language skills. This occurs as students lack specific training in learning foreign languages online.

The MISTRAL - Maximising students’ success in learning foreign languages online - project aims to maximise students’ success in online language learning by creating an open book that supports them to develop appropriate strategies and skills in order to become successful online learners. MISTRAL takes its name from the cold wind which blows strongly into the northern Mediterranean. Similarly, our project will promote a fresh and innovative perspective on e-learning by enhancing students’ active participation, motivation and engagement in learning foreign languages online.

"Our MISTRAL project has the potential to maximise students’ success in online language learning. It aims to support students to develop appropriate strategies and skills in order to become successful online students. An open book will be designed and created for students and from students! We are looking forward to working on it together with our students!"
