Academic journals are important sources of information.  Researchers will usually seek to publish the details of new work in an academic journal for scrutiny and validation by others in their discipline so these publications are a vehicle for the dissemination of breakthrough knowledge. Submissions are usually peer-reviewed or refereed before they are accepted for publication so articles in academic journals are regarded as being more credible than articles from popular or trade journals and magazines because they have gone through a rigorous review process before they are published.
