  2. Understand how to evaluate information according to particular criteria
  3. Understand basic search techniques such as exact phrase searching

Learning Outcomes

When you have completed this workshop, you will:

  1. Understand the importance of citing & referencing in terms of maintaining Academic Integrity
  2. Understand basic procedures like in-text referencing and the reference list
  3. Understand how else to avoid plagiarism including helpful tools for citing & referencing

Conducting a Literature Review

Learning Outcomes

When you have completed this workshop, you will:

  1. Understand the importance of critical thinking within the process of conducting a literature search and review
  2. Understand the importance of and how to narrow down a topic and articulate a research question
  3. Understand how to use tools and techniques including Boolean commands, facets and drop-down menus
  4. Understand how to access various sources of particularly scholarly information including via specialized databases and search engines.

When you have completed this tutorial, you will:

  1. Be able to build a search strategy for your research
  2. Be able to identify and choose relevant sources which best fit your research question
  3. Be able to execute and optimise your search as you progress
  4. Be able to evaluate your results for quality and relevance to your research question

Referencing

Learning Outcomes

When you have completed this tutorial, you will:

  1. Understand what referencing is and why it’s important for maintaining academic integrity.
  2. Be able to identify references from different information sources, and know the difference between a bibliography and a reference list.
  3. Be able to implement citing as appropriate for your subject area, including correctly paraphrasing, quoting, and understanding the situation where citing is not required.
  4. Appreciate the tools and technology available to help you to manage your references and cite correctly as you work.
