Academic Writing Centre: Introduction

AWC in Brief

Our mission is to help students to become better writers. We provide one-on-one tutorials on essay writing. These are free and available to everyone, regardless of level of experience or grade average. 

We also support student writing through workshops, modules, and competitions. 

The AWC is located on Floor 2, in the James Hardiman Library.

Opening Hours

During term time, the AWC is open at the following times:

Monday-Friday: 11.00-13.00 

Monday-Thursday: 18.00-20.00. 

Support in Irish is generally available on Monday and Tuesday (18:00-20:00).

What We Do

We offer help in the following areas: 

  • Brainstorming your essay topic and outline
  • Structuring an argument
  • Developing your thesis statement
  • Improving sentence structure and punctuation
  • Avoiding plagiarism
  • Using secondary sources
  • Editing and proofreading techniques

What We Don't Do

  • We do not do the work for you, but support you in becoming a better writer. 
  • We do not work as proofreaders, but we can teach you to proofread your work.
  • We do not assess essays or comment on the grades they received.
  • We do not judge anyone for any writing issues.
